Abstract

This article provides a multidimensional analysis of the phenomenon of extremism, examining its profound impact on social life, dissecting its root causes, and proposing evidence-based solutions. Moving beyond a narrow focus on violent extremism, this study conceptualizes extremism as a complex social and psychological process characterized by rigid adherence to absolutist ideologies, intolerance of dissent, and a willingness to justify harm outside established norms. It investigates how extremism corrodes the fabric of social life by eroding trust, fueling polarization, suppressing pluralism, and inciting violence, thereby threatening democratic discourse, public safety, and communal harmony. The analysis adopts an ecological framework, identifying and synthesizing causative factors at individual (psychological vulnerabilities, identity crises), group (in-group/out-group dynamics, charismatic leadership), societal (structural inequalities, political grievances, social alienation), and ideological (radical interpretations, conspiracy narratives) levels. Rejecting purely securitized responses, the article argues for a holistic, multi-pronged strategy focused on prevention and building societal resilience. Proposed solutions include promoting critical digital literacy, investing in inclusive civic education, strengthening community-based early warning systems, creating credible counter-narratives, addressing structural injustices through equitable policy, and fostering intergroup dialogue. The article concludes that countering extremism effectively requires not just dismantling violent networks, but actively cultivating the social, economic, and ideological conditions for a healthy, pluralistic, and cohesive public sphere.
